The use of colour in magic and divination is almost universal, insofar as vision and the perception of colour are among the so-called five senses of humanity. Blind and colour-blind seers and spell-casters do exist, and can be extremely effective, but the majority of conjure doctors and their clients, do see colour, respond to it, and use it in their everyday life as well as in acts of magic.

Colour Symbolism in Magic

For most rootworkers, adding colour symbolism to altar cloths, candles used in spell-casting, stones and crystals, packets and mojo bags, and floral offerings is second nature. Whether the symbol-system one uses in based on astrology, the chakras, or culture-specific religious or cultural traditions, the use of colours in magic and divination adds depth and focus to the practitioner's work.

  • PURPLE, also called Violet, is the colour of healing and helping others and of the power that we draw from the higher planes. It is the royal colour and is highly esteemed by spiritual leaders for its inherent strengthening qualities. It is the colour of deep understanding, and signifies aristocracy of the mind and thus rulership, authority, and control in this world.
  • BLUE represets spirituality. It ranges from the light faint shades of sea spray and periwinkle to the brightness of cyan, and thence to rich cobalt, deep indigo, somber navy, and darkest midnight blue. From the religiosity of lapis and the sacredness of shamanic turquoise, to the clear cerulean sky blue of healing, blue is the colour of devotion, faith, and the waters of life.
  • GREEN is indicative of generation and regeneration. From the bright greens of the outdoors, nature, and the wild, through the dark greens, forest greens, and hunter greens of diplomacy, tact, and economic stability, to the acidic greens of insincerity, trickery, jealousy, and deceit. Green is the colour of development, growth, financial abundance, and property.
  • YELLOW indicates intellectual effort, active mentality, and mastery. It runs the scale from pale straw yellow through sunshine yellow and gold to yellow-orange. It is the colour of the Sun at noon, the halos of the angels and saints, and of gold, the highest form of metal. Yellow represents the optimism inherent in spiritual power, success, and attainment.
  • ORANGE is the colour of vitality, youth, speech, and changes. It runs from warm yellow-gold and golden orange to the deepest and darkest pumpkin orange, burnt-orange, and orange-red. It is an indication of one’s physical health, from the fragile through to the virile. Orange signiies the ability to communicate with others in the marketplace of ideas.
  • RED represents life processes and activities, from the passion and sexual ardor of rose-red to the uncontrollable anger, violence, and lust of blood-red. It is the colour of sexuality, but angry people also "see red" -- and red is also the colour of war and of iron. In its many shades, red shows us the polarity of our dark passions and our desire for the goal of union.
  • PINK is the colour of emotional success. It is red blended with white, the sign of ardor lightened by spirituality, the colour of friendship. It is romantic and reconciliatory. It is a fresh, live, and warm colour, signifying good intentions and honesty. It represents the vision of truth and emotional success, and the love that warms and cheers the heart.
  • BROWN is a vital colour of the earth, the material source of the things that sustain us. It is the colour of humility and effacement of self, and also of transformation, as with the leaves that turn brown in the fall and drift down and nourish the soil, so that new spring leaves may emerge fresh and revitalized. Brown is above all, the creative colour of reality.
  • BLACK is the colour of mourning and grief. Symbolically and in reality, it is the all effacing colour, as it absorbs all light. It is the end of one plane and the beginning of another, the Alpha and Omega. It can indicate darkness in thought, deed, and emotion. It can represent fear, depressive ideas, and lack of courage. It is the negative pole of all thought.
  • WHITE is the positive pole that reflects all colours. It represents purity. Angels are pictured as clothed in white. Spirit manifestations are white. White is also an indication of our good intentions. Pure white is rarely found in nature. What we call white is usually tinged with yellow, blue, or violet, but even so, it symbolizes the world of Spirit.

The Twelve Colours of the Zodiac

The Zodiac is an ancient method of dividing the sky into sections in order to track the cosmic movements of the stars, planets, and constellations with respect to the viewer over time. It is used by astronomers to mark sidereal and planetary cycle; by astrologers to reveal information about world events, the characters of individual beings, and predict the future; and by conjure doctors and magicians as an aid to effective spell casting.

Each sign of the Zodiac is represented by an animal, favours a planet that is called is ruler, and is associated with a certain range of colours. When casting spells for people whose zodiac sign is known, it is common practice to use the appropriate colours in the selection of stones, candles , and floral offerings.

Seven Days, Seven Colours

A great many people believe that each day of the week has its own particular colour. They may wear a tie or a ribbon of the day’s colour or display a piece of silk in their home to commemorate it. They may use the day’s colour in the candles they burn on their home altars. Here is a list of weekdays, the planets said to rule them, and their colours:

  • Monday, The Moon: Pale Blue or Silver Candles
  • Tuesday, Mars: Red Candles
  • Wednesday, Mercury: Orange Candles
  • Thursday, Jupiter: Purple or Cobalt Candles
  • Friday, Venus: Green Candles
  • Saturday, Saturn: Indigo or Black Candles
  • Sunday, The Sun: Yellow or Gold Candles

The outer planets, visible by telescope, do not rule any days, but they do have symbolic colours. These are used by some in making Astral Candles:

  • [—], Uranus: Aqua-Blue Candles
  • [—], Neptune: Blue or Blue-Green Candles
  • [—], Pluto: Brownish-Black Candles

The Earth we stand upon is a planet as well, and it too has no day:

  • [-], Terra: Brown Candles

Colours of the Chakras

For more information, see Chakras

The Chakras are a series of energy centers in the body, situated along the spine, that govern physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. They originated in the Hindu and Buddhist traditions, and are now found in the philosophy and practice New Age and Reiki practitioners. Each chakra is associated with a colour, and these colours may be used in strengthening or rebalancing the body's chakras for physical and spiritual health.

Colour Divination

For more information, see Stolisomancy

Stolisomancers, also called clothing readers, may read the clothing of people who appear before them, clothes that have been sent to them for consideration, or a photo of a person dressed in some distinctive clothing. In their readings, they take into account the symbolism of the colour choices made by those they are reading.

Colour reading of rooms, natural spaces, and even the buildings and automobiles one sees on the road, can be used to make a divination.

Reading people's auras, or the perceived colour glow surrounding their bodies, is a technique that revealed inner thoughts and even undiagnosed mental and physical health issues.

Colour Healing

In Spiritual healing services, light work, and Crystallomancy,

  • Red is used to overcome anemia or diseases of the blood.
  • Yellow is the colour that is used to cure headaches.
  • Green is the colour that quickens growth, healing poverty and infertility.
  • Sky Blue brings spiritual healing to the body and peace to the mind.
  • Purple or Violet is used to project healing into those in need.
  • White evokes spiritual blessings and embraces the benevolent unknown.
