The Third Eye Chakra or Ajna is located centrally between the eyebrows. As the six vital Chakra along the central energetic channel, it creates a bridge between the Throat and the Crown Chakras. The Sanskrit word for Ajna means “command” or “perception,” and this chakra governs imagination, intuition, and spiritual awareness which can lead to deeper understanding beyond normal sight. The association of the inner faculty of vision beyond ordinary sight revealing subtle truth is significant in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions. In these traditions, awakening involves uncovering and bringing forth latent wisdom from within. The Third Eye Chakra functions as a center for intuitive vision, discernment, and bringing balance between rational thought and spiritual insight. In Vedic Astrology, Jupiter is associated with the Third Eye Chakra for its qualities in higher wisdom and insight nature of the chakra.

In modern times, the concept of the Chakra system has been embraced by New Age and holistic medical and spiritual traditions. In these teachings, balancing of the seven nodes of Chakra energy is considered essential for matters of emotional healing, physical well-being, financial stability, personal empowerment, and spiritual peace. Meditation, physical touch, body awareness, and the wearing of talismans may be included in the work of Chakra balancing.

The Third Eye Chakra encompasses the brow and mid-brain region, with modern interpretations link it to the pineal or pituitary gland also. Effective healing practices include meditation with focused concentration on the brow region, practicing guided imagery, engaging in intuitive excursuses, and mantra working using the seed of the Chakra. The mudra for the Third Eye Chakra is called Hakini Mudra. To make this hand gesture, bring the finger tips of both hands together so each finger touches each other lightly, forming a dome or tent shape with the hands. Keeping the palms slightly apart, not pressed together, and allow the thumbs to rest gently against each other. While holding this mudra, the awarness is place at the space between the eyebrows and intone the seed sound of this Chakra, which is “Om” or “Aum.”

Practices based on the concept of mind as the subtle element may be recommended to strengthen or balance the Third Eye Chakra. This includes meditation that calms awareness, intuitive exercises, dreamwork to awaken perception and insight. To connect with the aspect of the Third Eye, one may engage with plants by appreciating their flowers, leaves, or berries or, if medically appropriate, drinking an herbal tea made from these plants. You may also include the use of stones or crystals for sharpening intuition and awarness, such as Lapis Lazuli, Amethyst, Sodalite, Saphire, or Azurite, which can be placed before you, held in the hands for contemplation, worn as talismanic jewelry, or applied to the specified area of the body by a practitioner, while the client lays prone on the floor or a massage table. Healing methods such as Reiki have also been said to help with matters of the Throat Chakra.
