Understanding Scorpio in the Zodiacal Year
Scorpio is the Fixed Water sign, symbolizing frozen glaciers. It is technically a Feminine sign, but is ruled by Mars (or in modern parlance, Pluto), so it has masculine aspects, and is symbolized by a stinging animal. Mars is the ancient Roman god of war, action, and strife; Pluto is a god of the Underworld. Scorpio is one of two signs Mars rules, the other being Aries.
Because of the Martian rulership, Scorpios are passionate, fearless in the face of death, and intensely sexual — but because Scorpio is the Fixed Water sign, they are also stubborn, and emotionally complex. Their worst flaws may be perversity and sarcasm, which result from their strong reactions against social taboos surrounding sex and death.
