Category:Roman Deities
From Association of Independent Readers and Rootworkers
The deities of the Roman pantheon derive in part from the older Etruscan gods and goddesses endemic to the region, while the stories of their lives, as well as the depictions of their iconographic attributes during the era of the Roman Empire were supplemented by comparison to, and reflection of, the more ancient pantheon of Greece. For this reason, it is a commponplace idea to describe Roman deities in terms of earlier Greek deities, for instance referring to Minerva as "Roman Athena" and Bacchus as "Roman Dionysus".
The veneration of Roman deities was once believed to have ended with the coming of Christianity to southern Europe. However, along with Greek gods and Egyptian gods, they have been partially retained and also deliberately revived as a Neo-Pagan tradition.
