Preparing to receive First Communion

The Catholic Tradition is one of the three major forms of the religion of Christianity, the others being Protestantism and Orthodox.

Within the Catholic Tradition, the dominant denomination is the Roman Catholic Church. Smaller denominations include the Independent Catholic Church, the Liberal Catholic Church, and the Old Catholic Church. These latter denominations, considered as a group, are sometimes referred to as the Independent Sacramental Movement. In addition, various regional and local practices have persisted in areas where Catholicism only came to be the majority religion through conquest; these traditions, which vary greatly around the world, may include elements of Paganism, and although the adherents are nominally Roman Catholic, their embedded non-Christian beliefs have led to their variations from Roman Catholic norms to be labelled "folk-Catholicism."

The religious and magical practices of Catholic church rootworkers include specific forms of spirit work such as petitioning church saints as intercessors who carry prayers to The Holy Trinity or to Mother Mary. In folk-Catholic spirituality, a wide array of folk saints are also known for their patronage of certain facets of life. Within this tradition petitions may be made for extremely practical results, including returning lost lovers, finding lost objects, easing the burdens of the mentally ill, aiding in real estate and house-selling matters, bring luck and money in a hurry, and ensuring a peaceful home and family life. In addition to petitioning saints, Catholic root doctors may also call upon the aid of Angels and Archangels, and The Holy Trinity of The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Some root workers specialize in the petitioning of Catholic saints to grant a favor or wish. They may have a patron saint or favorite saint they petition on a client's behalf and will maintain an altar to their saint in their home. Others petition many different saints, each pertaining directly to the client's situation. Popular saints to work with are Saint Expedite, when you want something in a hurry; Saint Anthony, for finding lost things or to return a straying lover; Saint Clare, for insight and clarity into a situation; and Saint Joseph, for help with selling real estate and also keeping your home safe from need of repairs.

For more information, see The Holy Trinity

The Holy Trinity is a Christian conception of the triplicity of the Godhead, referred to as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, or as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. The Father is Jehovah God of the Jews; the Son is Jesus Christ, the Messiah or Redeeming Saviour; and the Holy Ghost is the Shekinah of the Jews, symbolized in Christianity as a snow white Dove or as Light. Many Christian root doctors call upon the direct aid of Jesus Christ, or the Holy Trinity of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost when working on behalf of clients. (Read More ...)

Working with Catholic Folk Saints

For more information, see Catholic Folk Saints

Folks saints are spirits who have not been canonized as saintly by the Roman Catholic Church, but whose existence, legends, and assistance are well known to spiritual workers who come from Catholic traditions. Popular Catholic folk saints include Santisima Muerte (Holy Death), Jesus Malverde, Maximon (San Simon-Judas), Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernandez, and the Intranquil Spirit. Some folk Catholic practitioners may also venerate and petition Deities from other religions, such as the Orishas of Santeria and Lukumi, the Kimpungulu of Palo Monte, Buddha or Guan Yin. Membership in the Catholic Religion

Many Christian denominations hold public worship services at which the clergy interact both with deity and with the laity. Membership in Christian houses of worship may require initiatic rites of passage such as baptism, confirmation and/or a declaration of faith in a specific creed.
