A Hopi Pueblo

The veneration of ancient Native American deities was violently suppressed by European colonizers, who hoped to replace all Native religions with various denominations of Christianity. However, due to centuries of covert and overt resistance, knowledge of these deities and the ceremonies appropriate to their veneration have been partially retained and also deliberately revived as contemporary Native American traditions.

Although many non-Native people are interested in working with Native deities, there are cultural reasons to proceed with respect and caution. For instance, some tribes require that a person be a an indigenous or adopted member of their tribe before any mysteries of the religion are revealed. Simply reading a book or web page on anthropology or ethnology does not qualify one for membership.

The vast geographic range of North, Central and South America and the subsequent diversity of deities means that this list is only a small tribute to the traditions and cultures of Native people, and not in any way a claim to initiation or spiritual knowledge.
