Gautama Buddha gives the Sermon of the Deer Park while sitting beneath the Bodhi Tree

Buddha or The Awakened One, is the central figure of emulation and veneration in the practice known as The Dharma or Buddhism. The word "Buddha" is a title meaning "the awakened one," and is not the name of any particular historical or spiritual being. It describes the immense insight into the world and its functions that the Buddha is said to have attained.

Gautama Buddha (480 - 400 BCE) is the founder of the religion of Buddhism. He is the first of the Triple-Gems of the Dharma; they being the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Although all Buddhists, by definition, revere and esteem the Buddha Gautama, also known as Siddhartha, Sakyamuni, and Tathagata, there are differences among major Buddhist lineages, including the Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana traditions, regarding his history and role in the cosmos. In many Buddhist denominations, Gautama is considered the singular originator and primary holder of instruction on theory and practice related to developing insight and moral character. However, in some Dharmic traditions he is conceived as one among innumerable Buddhas, another of which they have accepted as their lineage master and instructor.
